George Kambosos Jr. states he’s willing to do whatever it takes to win tonight’s lightweight contest against former pound-for-pound King Vasily Lomachenko for the vacant IBF title.
The former unified lightweight champion Kambosos needs a win to revitalize his sinking career, and as he points out, “I’m a man possessed.”
Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs) doesn’t say what in particular he’s ready to do to win the victory over Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs), but hopefully, he doesn’t turn the fight into a roughhouse contest where he bulldozes into head first and resorts to dirty tactics.
Lomachenko: Prepare for the Worst
If you’re Lomachenko, you got to be ready for Kambosos to fight in a physical way tonight because his back is against the wall, and he can’t afford another loss.
Kambosos has been beaten repeatedly in the last three years, and he doesn’t match up against the highly technical Lomachenko.
Kambosos’ Advantages
- Size: Tonight, Kambosos will likely be two divisions larger than Lomachenko.
- Youth: ‘The Emperor’ is six years younger than Lomachenko, and with less wear & tear.
- Home country: Kambosos will be on his own home turf, meaning the crowds will be cheering for every punch he throws and potentially confusing the judges on who is actually winning.
If Kambosos gets behind early, we could see him go all out, turning the fight physical against the smaller Loma. Although both fighters looked the same size at the weigh-in last Friday, there’s going to be a huge difference tonight due to Kambosos rehydrating a ton of weight.
The former unified lightweight champion Kambosos was completely drained at the weigh-in, appearing emaciated and looking like he’d starved himself for weeks to get down to the 135-lb limit. He’s now had time to add water back, and he’s going to have a gigantic size advantage over Lomachenko, just like Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez did when they fought him.
A Man Possessed
“I’m a man possessed. I’m willing to do whatever it takes in front of my home nation, in front of my people, in front of my family. He could see it in my eyes that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win this fight,” said George Kambosos Jr. to Chris Mannix’s site. “I know I have the dog in me. We’ll find out if he still has it.”
