Former super middleweight champion David Benavidez is backing Oleksandr Usyk to defeat Tyson Fury on Saturday night in their mega-fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Benavidez feels that IBF/WBA/WBO champion Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) is the “beat heavyweight on the planet now,” and certainly, his past two victories over Anthony Joshua are a good argument for that.
Those two wins for the 2012 Olympic gold medalist and former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk are greater than Fury’s best career win against an old 40-year-old Wladimir Klitschko.
Based on Usyk’s better resume and superior performances in his last four fights, you have to make him the winner of Saturday’s fight with Fury.
The basic problem is that Fury looks flat-out shot at this point in his 16-year career. The combination of being showered with gold by the Saudis, putting on a ton of weight, and fighting exclusively weak opposition for the past six years ruined his chances of being a good heavyweight of true worth.
When a fighter puts on a lot of weight from good eating and fights weak opposition for basically a 15 or 16-year career, this is what happens.
Fury’s “Manufactured” Image
Some boxing fans feel that Fury is just a fake manufactured fighter, created with wily match-making by his management and kept away from the true killers that would expose him as a phony.
The 35-year-old Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) is coming off a controversial 10-round split decision against novice boxer Francis Ngannou. He is reportedly receiving a massive purse of $100 million+ from the Saudis for Saturday’s fight with Usyk. If true, this is an absurd amount of money because he hasn’t beaten anyone good since his win against a faded Wladimir in 2015.
