Talented lightweight prospect J’Hon Ingram (4-0, 4 KOs) is unsatisfied with the current pace of his boxing career, and as a result, he wants to be released from his contract with Mayweather Promotions.
The 23-year-old boxer is the third young talent under the Mayweather Promotions umbrella to publicly show frustration in regards to inactivity. Recently, two boxers with bright futures voiced their frustration about inactivity, and they eventually parted ways with Mayweather Promotions.
Super-lightweight contender Richardson Hitchins (17-0, 7 KOs) and blue-chip welterweight prospect Jalil Hackett (8-0, 7 KOs) both left and moved on to sign with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. Ingram is ready to separate himself from Mayweather Promotions, but he can’t because he’s still under contract.
A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, J’Hon Ingram made his pro boxing debut in February 2022 when he scored a first-round TKO victory over Jamiah Mays. Ingram would collect two more knockout victories, and then he would end the year of 2022 by doing a favor for a boxing legend.
Back in September 2022, on the Floyd Mayweather vs Mikuru Asakura exhibition undercard, Mayweather’s bodyguard Ray “Jizzy Mack” Sadeghi made his boxing debut, and he was knocked out in the 3rd round by Japanese kickboxer Koji “Kouzi” Tanaka.
Two months later, Floyd Mayweather had another exhibition event as he faced YouTuber Deji Olatunji at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai UAE. Once again Kouzi Tanaka was on the undercard, and this time Mayweather brought a young talent from the Mayweather gym.
J’Hon Ingram displayed his blazing hand speed as he consistently hit Tanaka with sharp combinations. Ingram was dominant during the course of the three round exhibition, but the bout ended in a draw due to the fact that there was no official scoring.
J’Hon Ingram would go viral in February 2023 when he was sparring at the Mayweather gym and landed a counter left hook that sent Rolando “Rolly” Romero down to the canvas. Eight months later, Ingram signed a contract with Mayweather Promotions.
Since his signing, J’Hon Ingram has yet to participate in a fight promoted by Mayweather Promotions. Due to his inactivity, frustration has set in, and as a result, Ingram took to social media to publicly request that he be released from his contract.
Ingram has been a guest on multiple boxing platforms as he has spoke on his current situation and his desire to be released from his contract. The message is starting to gain traction as a FreeJhon hashtag has been circulating across social media.
During his appearance on The Queens of Boxing Talk, Ingram admitted Floyd Mayweather has been good to him, but he didn’t come to Las Vegas to receive handouts. Ingram wants to stay with Mayweather Promotions, but if they keep him inactive, he has no choice but to leave.
Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe is the point man when it comes to obtaining fight dates. Ingram believes a possible rumor involving Ellerbe could be the reason why he is experiencing inactivity.
“In my opinion, well, really not my opinion because I heard it, it was rumors, but then I got a phone call that really kind of confirmed it from someone on the other side that Leonard Ellerbe is leaving Mayweather Promotions and going to work for GTD,” Ingram stated.
What Ingram said in reference to Ellerbe’s future departure makes perfect sense if you are a person who pays attention to social media. If you look on Ellerbe’s Twitter/X page, all of his posts are about Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
J’Hon Ingram is employed as a professional boxer and his job is to fight, but when he’s not fighting technically he’s not working. Mayweather Promotions has approximately six fighters on their roster, but recently, the promotional company has only produced fights for Rolly Romero and Curmel Moton.
Mayweather Promotions has already lost two fighters who have the potential to be future world champions. J’Hon Ingram is under contract for the next couple years, and hopefully his promotional company will produce some fights for him, but if they don’t, they should do the right thing and #FreeJhon.
