The WBC will have their WBC ‘Freedom’ belt on the line for the June 15th fight between WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Frank Martin on PBC on Prime Video PPV at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The WBC needs to create a participation trinket belt for this mega-fight between Davis and Martin. There is already a lot of interest in the fight without the WBC’s Freedom belt, which looks to some on social media that they’re thirsty for attention.
Will Tank Take the Bait?
It’ll be interesting to see if Tank refuses the WBC Freedom belt afterward if he’s victorious or if he chooses to take it. If the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman enters the ring afterward to personally hand the Freedom belt to Tank for a nice photo-op, it will put him in a tough spot.
I wonder how the WBA will feel about the WBC giving a title to ‘Face of Boxing’ Tank Davis after the fight. That’s got to be a weird situation. It would be hilarious if Tank turned his back when they try to hand him the ‘Freedom’ belt for a photo-op. It would be priceless.
Tank vs. Martin doesn’t need another belt. It’s a great fight with two unbeaten sluggers going to war for twelve rounds in a stacked card. It’s a great fight, and the fans are going to see an exciting one for as long as it lasts.
Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) feels he’s ready to dethrone Tank Davis, and he’s been working hard in camp to score a knockout in this fight. As for Tank, he’s coming off a long layoff after his big-money fight against Ryan Garcia last year in April, and he wants another impressive win.
It seems like another needless belt. Tank (29-0, 27 KOs) hasn’t shown much interest in collecting titles, so he may refuse this one. He already has the WBA secondary strap and doesn’t need another one.
Why didn’t the WBC make their Freedom belt available for the recent Emanuel Navavarrete vs. Denys Berinchyk or the George Kambosos Jr. vs. Vasily Lomachenko fights?
If WBC puts their Freedom belt on the line for fights involving other sanctioning bodies like the WBA, they might as well do it for those instead of focusing on the Tank vs. Martin fight, which smells of opportunism.
