Diego Corrales will be inducted posthumously into the International Boxing Hall of Fame over the course of the 2024 induction weekend.
Corrales died in a motorbike crash in 2007, but not before he had left an indelible mark on the sport.
Most famously, he was known for winning one of the greatest fights of all time, against Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas in 2005. Corrales, badly hurt, rallied from the brink to stop Castillo in the 10th round. Those who were ringside will never forget it, and don’t think they will ever see a better fight.
“I put that on the level of Barrera-Morales I,” said Algieri. “It’s the highest level war you’re ever going to get. Both these guys are fantastic fighters and for them to go tit for tat the way that they did, hurting each other, big power from both men, to be able to hurt each other throughout, it was drama. It was like watching a play. It was insane.
“Do I feel bad watching it? No, because I don’t feel I’m watching two humans fight. I feel like I’m watching two gods meet in the clouds fighting each other with lightning bolts. It’s that kind of epic fight.
“He {Corrales] gave himself every fight. Left a lot in the ring and I don’t think would have done it any other way.”
