Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis ripped into challenger Frank Martin at today’s final press conference ahead of their match on Saturday. Tank (29-0, 27 KOs) was criticizing Martin about the expensive-looking costume jewelry he was wearing.
Martin’s Big Opportunity
Martin is not a big star, yet he wore the kind of valuable gold chains you normally see millionaire fighters adorning themselves with.
“Take that sponsored jewelry off; that s*** is not yours,” said Tank Davis to Martin.
Frank hopes to change his life financially with a win over WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis on Saturday night in their headliner on PBC on Prime Video Pay-Per-View at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
This is Martin’s big moment in his career. He’s been grinding away in anonymity in non-title fights, and he’s finally getting his chance to battle for a world title in the main event against the popular fighter Tank Davis, who some feel is the Face of Boxing.
Obviously, Tank’s lackluster PPV numbers in events before his fight with Ryan Garcia last year suggest that he’s not the Face of Boxing in the U.S.
Tank needs a successful PPV event where he’s bringing in the numbers without being helped because his last event was due to Ryan bringing in the buys with his 12 million Instagram followers.
Tank’s Weight and Potential Issues
Davis was jogging during the grand arrivals on Tuesday, and some believe he’s having problems getting to the 135-lb limit. If he misses weight, he’ll be beltless on Saturday night, and only Martin will have a chance of capturing his WBA secondary lightweight title.
If Martin can take the fight into the second half and land his heavy shots, he could win because Tank’s chin is just as weak as any fighter’s.
Ryan Garcia hurt him last April, and he only made it to the seventh round. It would have been interesting to see what he could have done to Tank if he had made it to the championship rounds.
