Gervonta Davis knocked out Frank Martin on Saturday night and even before the underdog had regained his footing talk turned to what comes next for “Tank”.
There is no shortage of options when one considers the names in and around the lightweight class in which Davis wears the WBA strap, with fighters like Vasiliy Lomachenko, Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez all capable of taking Davis’ career to the next level.
After all, though he’s been impressive, Davis – with the arguable exception of Ryan Garcia – is yet to defeat an opponent who was deemed to have much chance of beating him.
Lomachenko has emerged as an early front runner in the eyes of fans and, according to Kenny Ellis who co-trains Davis, the Ukrainian is now firmly on their radar.
“Because of the strong rumors in the air,” Ellis said on social media, “Phase 1. I’m studying up on Lomachenko. If and when this fight happens please let him come with his angles.”
In recent years, welterweight belt-holder Timothy Bradley has been one of Davis’ most vocal critics by illustrating that “Tank” is yet to beat an elite fighter. Bradley has since picked Stevenson to beat Davis and last week stated his desire to see Martin score the upset.
To which Ellis responded: “Hopefully he [Lomachenko, when he fights Davis] will let Timothy Bradley work his corner so he can pick up Loma’s shoes when Tank knocks him out of his socks.”
