Jaime Munguia could be back in September against an undefeated opponent.
Jaime Munguia’s return has been reported as possible for Sept. 21, with Munguia facing Erik Bazinyan in Arizona in a DAZN main event.
ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reported the news this afternoon.
The 27-year-old Munguia (43-1, 34 KO) is coming off of the first loss of his pro career, dropping a 12-round decision to Canelo Alvarez on May 4 in Las Vegas.
Canada’s Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KO) just had his first blemish, too, a 10-round draw with Shakeel Phinn on May 2 in Montreal. The 29-year-old Bazinyan has been sitting on a high ranking with the WBC, but that draw did him no favors momentum-wise, and has put him into a position where waiting seems possibly very counterproductive.
It could be a good fight, Munguia is generally enjoyable to watch when he gets rolling downhill, and Bazinyan is a solid boxer who simply may have been getting bored at the level he’s sat at for years now, and putting him across the ring from an obvious threat to beat him might elevate his game. Or he might just be good enough to beat Ronald Ellis and not a whole lot more. You fight the fights to find out.
