Shakur Stevenson is a potential option for the winner of the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko fight.
Shakur’s Golden Opportunity
Promoter Bob Arum thinks the winner of the proposed unification lightweight title fight between Lomachenko and Tank Davis will want to fight WBC champion Shakur (21-0, 10 KOs) next.
Shakur is defending his WBC title against Artur Harutyunyan next month on July 6th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It’s a fight that Shakur is expected to win, but you can’t rule out an upset if he fights the way he did in his previous bout last November.
Need for a Statement Performance
It’s important that Shakur make his fight with Harutyunyan exciting by brawling with him and not running around the ring like he often does in his fights. If Shakur fights in his usual safety-first style, he might as well forget about getting the winner or the loser of the Tank-Lomachenko bout.
Stevenson will be a free agent after his match with Harutyunyan, but it remains to be seen if he will re-sign with Top Rank. If Stevenson, 26, re-ups with Top Rank, he’ll want to face the winner of the Tank vs. Lomachenko fight, and he might also want to face Teofimo Lopez.
If Tank Davis is victorious against Lomachenko, Arum can try to put a fight together between him and Shakur, but he won’t be able to guarantee that it will happen. Tank will have to want that fight, but it’s questionable whether he will.
“Shakur is a tremendous fighter. He’s got a tough fight [against Artem Harutyunyan] coming up on July 6th, but certainly if the Tank-Lomachenko fight is made, Shakur will take another fight about that time and be available to fight the winner,” said Bob Arum to Fighthype about WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson being an option for the winner of the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko contest.
Shakur vs. Tank or Lomachenko
“Shakur is a tremendous talent, and whoever wins the Lomachenko-Tank fight, I’m sure, would like to fight Shakur after that,” said Arum.
