Eddie Hearn believes there’s a chance that Canelo Alvarez will face Edgar Berlanga next in September.
Berlanga Emerges as a Strong Contender
Hearn says there haven’t been any negotiations taking place between undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo and his Matchroom fighter Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). He feels it’s a fight that could take place in Saudi Arabia.
It could be a pre-fight for Canelo before he faces Terence Crawford. Hearn says he’ll wait for the call from Canelo’s people.
It’s believed that Berlanga, 27, is the option Canelo could go in if he doesn’t fight his IBF mandatory William Scull. There’s talk of Canelo giving Scull a step aside and then facing Berlanga next.
The fighter that Canelo almost surely won’t be facing next is his WBC mandatory David Benavidez, because he’s shown no desire to fight him and wants $200 million before he’d agree.
“I can’t in a million years believe they’re going to fight Scull. I would think that it’s a deal to step aside. I’m sure there’s a lot of conversations with Canelo Alvarez all around the world,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to Boxing News on who undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will be fighting next.
Hearn’s Confidence in Berlanga
“I’m not really involved in those other than a potential fight with Edgar Berlanga, which there have been some murmurs of. There are no negotiations on that fight. Obviously, he’s under contract with us. He’s a Matchroom fighter.
“It’s a great fight. I think there’s a chance Canelo could fight Berlanga in September. We’ll wait for the call,” said Hearn. “It’s a fight that could take place in Saudi Arabia,” Hearn said about a match between Canelo and Berlanga.
“I know His Excellency would like to make Canelo-Crawford. So, is there a pre-plan? I’m not involved in those discussions, but I will be if Edgar Berlanga gets the pick,” said Hearn.
