Tyson Fury is still in loser denial about his defeat against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk on May 18th.
Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) claims he watched his fight many times and still believes he deserved the victory in their undisputed clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fans and the judges felt differently, seeing Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) as the winner.
Many fans felt that the referee’s actions in the ninth, when he gave Fury a strange-looking eight round when he was on the cusp of being knocked out, robbed Usyk of scoring a KO.
Fury was badly hurt, having beaten hit with 20+ repeated headshots without throwing anything back. The fight should have been stopped on the spot, but the ref stepped in and gave Fury a lifeline by giving him a standing eight.
Fury Claims Victory Despite Judges’ Decision
“I’ve watched the fight back lots and still got the same answer – I thought I won,” said Fury to Furocity about his bout with Usyk.
“Usyk knows he didn’t beat me. I thought I boxed the head right off him for most of the rounds. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it’d be. People said he’s hard to hit, I was lighting him up with four-punch combinations and laughing at him.”
It didn’t look like Fury was having fun, as he was in a woeful physical state, with his midsection quite chubby. Fury had his trunks hiked up to near his armpits to give Usyk a narrow target to land his body shots, and the referee should have instructed him to adjust that.
It was shocking that the referee didn’t stop the action from the first round to fix that problem.
Fury’s overall appearance was terrible, aged and not the young gazelle that had beaten Wladimir Klitschko nearly a decade ago. The way Fury looked, he won’t erase the years by the time the rematch with Usyk happens in December.
Unless he can turn back the clock to become a 20-plus-year-old again, Fury will be in trouble when he faces the undisputed champion Usyk.
The scores were 115-112 and 114-113 for Usyk and 114-113 for Fury.
The Drunken Aftermath
The Gypsy King lost his WBC heavyweight title in that fight, and he’s taking the loss pretty hard, judging by the recent video of him drunkenly being escorted out of a pub and then falling on his face outside on the sidewalk.
It was a sad spectacle to see Fury falling apart like this, and it was a sign that he was well aware that he was a beaten man.
