Shakur Stevenson thinks fans evaluate performances compared to knockout artist Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in his fights. He feels fans judge him on Tank’s scale, leading to criticism.
Feeling Judged on a Different Scale
It’s not only Tank Davis that fans judge Shakur’s performances unfavorably. There are also many others in the lightweight division, such as Abdullah Mason, Vasily Lomachenko, and William Zepeda, to name just a few.
Shakur’s fighting style of hit-and-not-get-hit doesn’t fit this era of what fans are looking for when they watch boxing on a Saturday night. They want to be entertained, and Shakur’s fights don’t provide that. He’s fighting in the wrong era, and it is like a dinosaur in the 21st century.
“People are blessed with different abilities. He’s blessed with the ability that if he cracks you, nine times out of ten, you’re going to go down,” said Shakur Stevenson to NajiChill’s YouTube channel.
Stevenson is a dull fighter to watch, and not enough fans enjoy his archaic style. This is more evident now because he’s fighting in the popular lightweight division. His fights are receiving more attention from fans, who don’t like what they see.
Different Abilities, Different Strengths
“I’m blessed with amazing eyes; I can see punches coming my way and get away from them. They are probably judging me on a scale based on him. He’s a great fighter, he’s a special fighter, but I’m special in my own right, too,” said Shakur about Tank Davis.
What’s interesting is how Shakur can’t own his faults in his game. He views fans and the media as wrong about him and won’t attempt to change.
Despite fans hating Shakur’s fighting style, he might still make a lot of money in fights against Tank Davis and Vasily Lomacyenko, but they’ll likely be non-entertaining. Predictably, we could see fights similar to those between Shakur, Edwin De Los Santos, and Jeremiah Nakathilia.
Shakur’s popularity is now more about him being so disliked and criticized in the media than his performing well. With ESPN having shown Shakur’s fights, fans have seen them and disliked his fighting style. They’ve noted how arrogant and obtuse he is about his fights being so boring. It’s odd to the fans to have someone so out of touch.
