Promoter Oscar De La Hoya posted his first ‘Clap Back Thursdays, and he made it clear that he’s not interested in signing free agent Shakur Stevenson to his Golden Boy Promotions company.
De La Hoya singles out WBC lightweight champion Shakur’s recent comment about not fighting for the public and doing it for himself. Oscar took that remark to mean that Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) has no interest in entertaining the fans and that’s a fighter that he doesn’t want on his roster.
Stevenson’s Response
Shakur replied on social media to De La Hoya’s Clapback, saying this:
“He’s mad ’cause he found out I’m not signing with him. It’s ok, Oscar DeLa Hoya. You’ll get over it.”
Stevenson didn’t say who he is signing with, but he praised his former promoter Bob Arum on Thursday, making some followers believe he’s come up high and dry on the free agent mark in landing a new promoter. So instead of signing with Matchroom, PBC, or Mayweather Promotions, Shakr could return to Top Rank.
De La Hoya also aimed the World Boxing Council, who ordered his fighters, William Zepeda and Stevenson, to begin negotiations for a fight. De La Hoya isn’t on board with his fighter Zepeda (31-0 27 KOs) being ordered by the WBC to fight.
Oscar states he’s looking at three other options for Zepeda’s next fight. He doesn’t say who they are, but WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk is likely at the top of the list.
“Let’s start with the WBC ordering Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda. Ordering? What does that mean? They ordered Canelo vs. Benavidez three years ago, and that hasn’t happened. William will make his decision very soon, and he has three other options,” said Oscar De La Hoya in his Clap Back Thursday discussions about his fighter William Zepeda.
“Shakur Stevenson, you’re a great fighter and a great talent, but not for me. I believe when somebody says you’re not fighting for the public, I cannot promote.”
