Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga undercard was announced today for their event on September 14th on PBC on Prime Video and DAZN PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There’s not much to like about the Canelo-Berlanga undercard to make it an appealing event to purchase. In each case, the fights are bad and not worth being on a PPV event unless they are placed off TV. The undercards one or two notable fights to entice fans because what they have here it’s not getting the job done.

There’s no word whether the price of the Canelo vs. Berlanga event will be at a discount to lure fans into purchasing it.

Questionable Matchups

  • Erislandy Lara vs. Danny Garcia: WBC middleweight champion Lara (30-3-3, 18 KOs) defends his title against #11 Danny ‘Swift’ (37-3, 21 KOs), who hasn’t fought in two years since 2022.
  • Caleb Plant vs. Trevor McCumby: Former IBF 168-lb champion Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) is fighting the little-known 14-year pro McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) for the WBA interim super middleweight title. The winner will be in line to challenge champion Canelo for his WBA belt. What’s interesting about this fight is Plant has lost two out of his last three fights hasn’t fought in 1.5 years, and is being given a golden opportunity to punch his ticket to fight Canelo in a rematch. It’s utterly pathetic.
  • Rolly Romero vs. Manuel Jaimes: Former WBA light welterweight champion Rolly (15-2, 13 KOs) is coming off an eighth-round knockout against Isaac Cruz in March and is fighting an unknown unranked lightweight. This is a move to try and save the 29-year-old Rolly’s career, but I don’t think it will work. He might lose to this guy, which would be good for fans.

Plant’s Path to Canelo Rematch

Plant would need to beat someone a lot better than McCumby for fans to show interest in seeing a rematch between him and Canelo Alvarez in 2025. Canelo knocked out Plant in 2021, and he’s only won one fight since, stopping 38-year-old Anthony Dirrell in 2022 before losing to David Benavidez last year in March 2023. Plant has not fought since.

For fans to be willing to pay to see Canelo-Plant, ‘Sweethands’ Plant would need to beat a good contender like Christian Mbilli because McCumby is not good enough.

This guy has zero notable wins on his inflated 28-0 record, and it’s unbelievable that he’s floated around for 14 years without fighting anyone recognizable. How on earth is this guy ranked in the top 15, and why hasn’t they fought anyone? We know why Plant is fighting him; he’s been beaten twice in his last three fights and is needy, but no words describe how poor this fight is.

Danny Garcia’s Title Shot Based on Past Glories

Fans are shocked that the 36-year-old Danny Garcia is being given a title shot after two years out of the ring, but he gets the opportunity based on his accomplishments in the distant past.

The former two-division world champion Danny was a popular fighter in 2012, but his career has fallen apart since he lost his WBC 147-lb title to Keith Thurman in 2017. Since that loss, Garcia has lost two out of his last six fights and beaten exclusively lesser opposition.

Like many former world champions who became millionaires, Danny Garcia’s activity level has dropped to nothing recently. Whatever ambition Garcia once had disappeared after he made much money from his PPV fights against Errol Spence and Thurman. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Danny Garcia’s net worth is $8 million, which puts him in the same ballpark as Andy Ruiz.

The only surprise is Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, the recently knocked-out WBA light welterweight champion, fighting lightweight Manuel Jaimes (16-1-1, 11 KOs) in a 10-rounder. This fight is a confidence booster for Rolly (15-2, 13 KOs) because his opponent, Jaimes, isn’t ranked in the top 15 at lightweight.

Rolly has looked so poor in his last three fights that he can’t be trusted to beat even this level of opponent, and it won’t be a shock if he’s knocked out again.

Romero lost two out of his last three fights, and his only win in the last two years was his controversial knockout win over Ismael Barroso in a fight he was losing.
