Abdullah Mason, the lightweight prospect, will be looking to take the shine from the headline act against Mike Ohan Jr. this Saturday, August 17th, on ESPN.
The southpaw Mason’s one-punch power, combination punching, and killer instinct are exciting to watch because he doesn’t waste time trying to box his opponents like many fighters.
Mason’s Rising Star Power
Mason stole the show from WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson on July 6th, destroying Luis Lebron by a third-round knockout at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
That was supposed to be Shakur’s show, but Mason made him look bad, knocking out Lebron and getting the most applause from the Newark crowd.
This wasn’t the first time Mason took the spotlight from the main event because he’s recently made it a practice. He’s likely to do it on Saturday when he fights Ohan Jr. (19-2, 9 KOs) on the Christian Mbilli vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko undercard at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Canada.
U.S. fans are more interested in Abdullah Mason than seeing super middleweight Mbilli fighting veteran Derevyanchenko in the headliner. Mason is viewed as the star of this event by far.
Top Rank’s Cautious Approach
Top Rank has Mason stowed away below the main event fight Mbilli vs. Derevyanchenk and the co-feature clash between Aslanbek “The Lion” Makhmudov and Guido “The Gladiator” Vianello collide.
The 20-year-old Mason (14-0, 12 KOs) is seen as the best prospect in the sport, but he’s still being brought along slowly by his promoters at Top Rank. However, Mason looks good enough already to defeat WBC champion Shakur Stevenson and former undisputed 135-lb champ Devin Haney.
Mason’s power and the relentless pressure on his opponents would be a nightmare for Haney or Shakur. It’s too bad Haney moved up in weight because he and Mason would be an interesting fight to watch.
Top Rank will hold the 5’9″ Mason back to wait until he gets more experience before putting him in a title shot against Shakur if he still holds the WBC belt or one of the other champions.
“I’m very seasoned and ready to show Top Rank what I’m all about,” Ohan Jr. said. “Don’t blink!”
