Promoter Oscar De La Hoya summed up why Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is so loved by boxing fans worldwide, saying he actually “fights.”
A Willingness to Risk
De La Hoya views Tank Davis as the gold standard for how fighters should aspire to be because that’s the true path to superstardom. Oscar wants fighters to be willing to risk getting knocked out to achieve the star power that Tank holds today, but only a few are willing to rise up to follow Tank.
Golden Boy promoter De La Hoya admires Tank and understands he’s the sport’s superstar because he’s willing to put himself in harm’s way to score knockouts and entertain the fans.
Sadly, that’s a missing ingredient that we saw from other fighters in the sport, and that’s why Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) is at the top.
The courage that the Baltimore native Tank Davis shows is similar to the bravery that the former six-division world champion De La Hoya showed during his career because he was a fighter who wasn’t afraid to take a shot to land one of his own.
Path To Stardom
“He’s very skillful, a beast, and knows how to figure you out. The one thing I love about Tank is what I love, and this is why he’s going to be great: because he fights,” said Oscar De La Hoya on the Club Shay Shay YouTube channel.
“When you fight, you’re going to get hit, and when you fight, you’re going to get hit, and you might get knocked out. But that’s the beauty about Tank. He fights, and that’s why they love him. That’s a perfect example. Tank Davis is a star,” said De La Hoya.
Some fans feel that De La Hoya’s flattery is a calculated move to lure him away from PBV and have him sign with Golden Boy Promotions. I don’t see it that way. De La Hoya is trying to tell fighters that if they want what Tank Davis has, they’ve got to change the way they fight because they won’t sell tickets fighting cautiously, as we’ve seen with Shakur Stevenson.
