Ryan Garcia says no one will have missed him when Devin Haney resumes his career because he’s on fans’ radar unless his dad, Bill Haney, is hyping him up.
Interestingly, Haney hasn’t already lined up a fight to get back in the ring because, unlike Ryan, he’s not suspended, and there’s no reason for him to sit inactive for long periods. It’s been five months since Haney, 25, lost to Ryan on April 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Haney will have to come back sooner or later. He can’t just wait for Ryan’s suspension to expire next April before he fights again, and he won’t be ready for the rematch if he chooses to take the risk of a second fight. If Haney wants to quiet fans’ doubts about him, he needs to start fighting again and beat someone good.
His former promoter, Eddie Hearn, wants him to challenge IBF 140-lb champion Liam Paro in December in August, but that might not be a good idea. Unless the money is out of this world, Haney should focus more on a contender to fight in the U.S.
“You got Devin Haney fighting at the OC Fair [Orange County Fair]. So when he returns to boxing, he’ll say, ‘Boxing missed me for three months.’ Nobody even knew you were gone. If your daddy ain’t speaking, nobody [cares] about you,” said Ryan Garcia on the Say Cheese YouTube channel about Devin Haney.
“Second, if all, how are you going to fight a random civilian at the OC Fair and didn’t get a knockout there? You can’t even knock out a civilian, let alone a professional fighter,” said Ryan.
Haney had an altercation at a recent Orange County Fair, and he was seen on video throwing a punch that appeared to miss some person. It’s unclear what transpired to cause Haney to want to throw a shot at the person, but it’s a good thing he didn’t lay him out.
The Lingering Impact of Defeat
The loss last April seems to have taken something out of Haney, causing him to sit inactive and waste valuable time in his career. Haney’s former promoter, Eddie Hearn, believes that he’s been physically and emotionally done in by the loss.
Devin’s dad, Bill, creates tremendous interest in his fights, and he’s not talking; you wouldn’t even know Haney exists on this planet. Without Bill Haney talking to Devin, he’s invisible.
