Caleb Plant got caught, recovered, chipped away and landed a late knockout in a hard-fought win over Trevor McCumby on the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga undercard Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McCumby wobbled Plant at the end of the second round with a left hook, and in the fourth, he again caught Plant with a left hook – this one landing on Plant’s forearm and sending him stumbling to the canvas. Despite Plant protesting that it was a push, the referee ruled it a knockdown.
That was the fight’s pivot point. From the fifth round on, Planet landed 133 power punches to McCumby’s 59. Plant broke McCumby down by forcing him to the ropes and unleashing uppercuts, hooks and body punches. A flurry of landed power punches at the end of the ninth round convinced the referee to halt the bout.
