IBF lightweight champion Vasily Lomachenko is considering retirement from the sport. Lomachenko had been in talks recently about fighting a unification against WBA 135-lb champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis before deciding to take the remainder of the year off.
Mike Coppinger said on X, “There’s a lot of talk that Lomachenko is actually going to retire.”
Did Tank Intentionally Age Lomachenko?
That would mess up Tank’s team’s plans to fight the popular Loma, who has had a long pro and amateur career. Lomachenko first called out Gervonta Davis in 2017, but the Baltimore native showed no interest for obvious reasons.
Lomachenko was on top of the world, and he would have been a nightmare for Tank to fight. Davis is a fighter who relies on his power only and can be easily outboxed, even by fighters with marginal skills.
Instead of fighting him, Tank focused on lesser threats. He waited until 2024 before finally showing interest in facing Lomachenko. Some boxing fans believe Gervonta intentionally waited to age Lomachenko. In other words, the younger Tank Davis waited until Lomachenko had gotten old before finally choosing to fight him, knowing that he would be beatable to him.
As an amateur, Lomachenko had 396 fights, losing only one. He’s been in the sport a lot longer than many fighters. Celebrity Net Worth estimates that Lomachenko’s net worth is $8 million. So, he’s not hurting for money. He lives in Odesa, Ukraine.
Lomachenko Should Be Unbeaten
The 11-year pro, Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs), will turn 37 on February 17th and is coming off an impressive 11th-round knockout win against former unified 135-lb champion George Kambosos Jr. on May 12th in Perth, Australia.
Lomachenko was a raw deal in controversial losses to Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez, both of which He felt he won. He wasn’t happy about his defeat against Orlando Salido in his second pro fight in 2014.
Most fans that saw the Haney fight had Lomachenko winning quite comfortably and felt the judges gave him the shaft that night. With three controversial fights taken away, Lomachenko should still be unbeaten and be a much bigger star than he is now.
If Lomachenko is unhappy over his 12-round unanimous defeat against Haney on May 20, 2023, in Las Vegas, it’s understandable why he would lose interest in boxing.
