IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois says open to a fight against Fabio Wardley next. Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) will decide with his father, team, and promoter Frank Warren who will be his next fight.
It’s not decided yet whether Fabio will be Dubois’ next opponent, but given all the talk, it’s very likely that he will. A better choice would be Joseph Parker or Martin Bakole. Those two are far more deserving of a title shot against Dubois than Wardley, and it would be more entertaining to watch.
They would have a chance of winning. You can’t say that about Wardley, who went life-and-death with Frazer Clarke in their first fight last March. Although Wardley destroyed Clarke in their rematch on October 12th, that was a fluke. That wasn’t an indication of how good Wardley is because he’s not that kind of a talent.
Wardley turns 30 on December 18th, and has never fought a true world class-level fighter during his career. Going up against Dubois would be baptism by fire for the seven-year pro Wardley, and he may not last long.
Ideally, Wardley needs two to three more years of experience to face a talent like Dubois, but he’s looked shaky even against British-level opposition.
If this is just about money, throw Wardley in there and let the shark Dubois devour him on February 22nd. It won’t be a fair fight because Wardley is so limited that he may not last more than two rounds.
The rematch against Anthony Joshua looks unlikely due to AJ’s lingering injuries from a fight against Dubois on September 21st and the training camp he attended to prepare for that battle.
If Dubois fights on February 22nd, he’ll need a good opponent to keep the momentum going with his career. The unbeaten #12 IBF Wardley (18-0-1, 17 KOs) is well-known in the UK and is coming off a first-round knockout win over Frazer Clarke on October 12th.
“Bring them all on these contenders. They can all get a piece,” said Daniel Dubois to talkSport Boxing about the next title defense of his IBF heavyweight belt. “It’ll be everyone’s decision. My dad, the team, Frank Warren. We’ll all decide. I’ve gone through some good battles in my last three fights, and I’m up there now.
“Whoever I’ve got to destroy, I’ll do it. I’m on form now, my confidence is right up there, I’m feeling on top of the world. So whoever I’ve gotta destroy and take out of their misery, I’ll do it.”
