Floyd Schofield took a clear win over Rene Tellez Giron.

Floyd Schofield showed some flaws still, but took a clear unanimous decision win over Rene Tellez Giron in Golden Boy’s main event from Las Vegas, with Gabriela Fundora becoming undisputed flyweight champion on the undercard.

The 22-year-old Schofield (18-0, 12 KO), considered one of boxing’s top lightweight prospects, beat Giron on scores of 116-111, 118-109, and 118-109 in an often-ugly bout heavy on fouls and only occasionally exciting.

Schofield did get rocked a little early by the 25-year-old Giron (20-3, 13 KO), then was ruled down in round 11 when he got clipped while missing a punch. Schofield was also criticized by his corner for lapses in defense and in judgment. Schofield likely could have cruised more to a decision, but was still fighting to do damage into the 12th and final round.

Schofield is highly ranked by the WBA at 135 lbs, but there are still steps to take before trying to fight at the very top level, unless an incredible offer is made.

Gabriela Fundora goes undisputed

DAZN

At age 22, Gabriela Fundora became boxing’s youngest four-belt undisputed champion ever, stopping Gabriela Alaniz in the seventh round to fully unify the flyweight division.

Fundora (15-0, 7 KO) came in holding the IBF title, and added the WBC, WBA, and WBO belts with the win over Alaniz (15-1, 6 KO). Alaniz was competitive here, but got dropped once and didn’t agree with the referee’s call, so Fundora put her down face-first to finish it. No arguing that.

It was a fine showing from Alaniz, really, in the best fight that could be made in this division, but Fundora is more than just someone who’s tall for her weight. She has legit skills, she’s a good, aggressive, offense-first boxer, and she makes her shots count. This is one of the best young fighters in the sport today.

Also on the undercard: Bektemir Melikuziev won a split decision over David Stevens in what was meant to be a WBA eliminator at super middleweight, but Melikuziev missed weight, so the eliminator benefits were only there if Stevens won. One judge had the fight 116-112 for Stevens, but the others had it 117-111 and 118-110 for Melikuziev. … Super middleweight Darius Fulghum and welterweight Joel Iriarte scored quick stoppage wins.
