Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis reacted to Floyd Schofield’s uneven performance last Saturday night against a motivated Rene Tellez Giron, taunting him about his struggle to win the fight. Davis remarked, “I’m getting my bite to eat,” suggesting that he wants to fight the #2 WBA-ranked Schofield.

‘Kid Austin’ Schofield fired back at Tank, telling him, “You can be next.”
Schofield is the next highest-ranked fighter for Tank Davis’ WBA belt, provided he doesn’t vacate it, and it would be an interesting fight for the fans compared to his current scheduled match against the super featherweight Lamont Roach Jr. That guy has zero power and is a defensive wizard.
Tank has disappointed fans with his choice of opponents in the last six years since 2018, and Schofield would be a welcome improvement. A fight between Tank Davis and Schofield would be more entertaining for fans than a match between the Baltimore native and Shakur Stevenson.
The WBA lightweight champion, Tank Davis, said Schofield “18-0, 12 KOs) was getting his backside beat Giron (20-4, 13 KOs) in their fight at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
Schofield was hurt in round three by Giron’s punch to the back of the head during an exchange. When Schofield returned to his corner after the round ended, he missed the stool when sitting down and fell on the canvas. Later in the fight, Schofield was knocked down in round eleven when he was caught by a left hand from Giron when attempting to hit him with a big right.
Despite those two incidents, Schofield still won the fight by a wide 12-round unanimous decision, scores 118-109, 116-111, and 118-109. Compared to some of the undercard fights on the Golden Boy-promoted card.
Schofield’s was one of the more drama-filled. That’s his style of fighting, which was far more entertaining to watch than the headliner on the Top Rank card shown on ESPN last Saturday night. That was a painfully boring fight, just like the previous encounter.
Tank Davis has a title defense against Lamont Roach coming up on a still-to-be-determined date in January. But once that fight is out of the way, it could clear the way for Schofield to challenge Tank for his WBA title in mid-2025.
