Promoter Oscar De La Hoya went after Jake Paul in this week’s Clapback Thursday, ripping him for fighting 58-year-old Mike Tyson this Friday night on Netflix.
De La Hoya says he hopes Tyson knocks Jake out with a left uppercut. Oscar feels that it’s low of Jake to choose the former heavyweight champion Tyson for a fight because he’s an “old man,” and it does nothing to add “credibility” to his resume, which is filled with wins over older fighters.
De La Hoya says Jake could “hurt” Tyson in the fight, and he doesn’t like it. I don’t think Paul, 27, really cares what De La Hoya or anyone else says about his choosing to fight Tyson because he’s been fighting older guys since he started his career four years ago in 2020.
Oscar Wants Jake To Lose
If Tyson lands anything significant with the 14-oz gloves he’s wearing, he likely will knock Jake Paul out in this fight because he’s not been hit by anyone with his kind of power during his career. In Tyson’s workouts, he looks like he could knock down a house with a single punch.
“After only a few years in the sport, you’ve been able to get yourself an enormous payday, and you’re fighting Mike Tyson, but you’re fighting him at 60 years old,” said Oscar De La Hoya during his clapback Thursday this week.
Paul wouldn’t be able to get this payday after just a “few years” in boxing if he didn’t have an enormous following outside of the sport as a YouTuber with over 20 million subscribers and 27 million Instagram followers. Jake is making this money because of his followers, not because he’s worked his way up. He’s not fought anyone yet in boxing who wasn’t limited.
This may go over the head of fans, but Jake has fought only ONE boxer during his career, and that was cruiserweight Tommy Fury, and he lost to him by an eight-round split decision last year on February 26, 2023.
The remaining fighters Paul has fought have been non-boxers from MMA and one basketball player. In his only experience against a boxer, Jake was schooled by Tommy Fury, who isn’t a world-class fighter. Losing to Tommy was a bad experience for Jaul, who gave up on fighting boxers after that defeat and has feasted on these non-boxers since:
– Mike Perry
– Ryan Bourland
– Andre August
– Nate Diaz
Those are NOT boxers, and it’s understandable why Jake didn’t return to fighting guys from the sport after his loss to Tommy Fury. That guy made him look bad by out-boxing him and exposing his lack of skills.
I think it’s safe to say that even if Mike Tyson looks totally shot, he’ll still knock out Jake Paul just based on his power, experience, and talent. Let’s get this straight: Jake Paul is NOT a boxer. He’s an influencer who yaps on YouTube and Instagram. In other words, he’s a marketer.
“This is serious s*** where you can actually hurt him because he’s an old man. Jake, it adds zero credibility to your resume. I’ve been saying this for years. If you want to be taken seriously in boxing, you need to take a different path. Nevertheless, I’ll be watching, and I hope Mike catches you with that left uppercut and knocks you out.”
“One punch. Be careful with Paul only because Paul has tricks. Tyson gets hit with one punch at his age, you start to hear funny noises,” said George Foreman to USA Today about what Jake Paul can do to Mike Tyson if he lands.
“Jake Paul is no pushover, and he is not afraid of any of these guys. Time is on his side. So happy for Mike Tyson, he needed this excitement in his life. Everyone is talking about it.”
