The British Boxing Board of Control issued their latest British title circular on Thursday afternoon.
The most eye-catching piece of news was their decision to order Lyndon Arthur and Liam Cameron to box in a final eliminator for Lewis Edmondson’s light heavyweight title.
In June, Arthur, 24-2 (16 KOs), and Cameron, 23-6-1 (10 KOs), boxed over ten tough rounds in Bolton. In his first major fight after a long lay-off, Cameron performed well and forced Arthur to work hard for the split decision victory he was awarded.
Although the rematch would attract plenty of attention, it is open to debate as to whether either man would be keen on fighting again without a major prize on the table.
Arthur has competed at the highest level and although he came up short in a bid for Dmitry Bivol’s WBA title last December, he will want to get back into the big time. He remains a major name on the British scene, and it remains to be seen if he is interested in going over old ground in order to qualify for a shot at Edmondson.
Cameron’s star is at the highest point it has been for years. After pushing Arthur close, he went on to give Olympic silver medallist, Ben Whittaker, all he could handle in Saudi Arabia. Cameron appeared to be gaining control when, in the fifth round, the pair tumbled backwards over the top rope leaving Whittaker unable to continue. Cameron had to settle for a draw and has been vocal in his calls for an immediate rematch. He recently signed a deal with Queensberry Promotions and his team will have to decide which direction to steer him in.
All will be revealed next month as purse bids are scheduled for December 11th.
The talented Brandon Daord, 10-0 (3 KOs), still can’t catch a break. Daord has had more than his share of bad luck over the years but had been due to fight Quaise Khademi for the vacant super flyweight title. Khademi’s withdrawal has opened the door for Scotland’s Matthew McHale, 6-0 (5 KOs), to step in and take the opportunity but a new date and venue is awaited.
There was also confirmation that Sam Noakes, 15-0 (14 KOs), will make a voluntary defence of his title against Ryan Walsh, 29-4-2 (15 KOs), on December 7th at Wembley Arena. The exciting Noakes successfully defended his European title against Italy’s Gianluca Ceglia in September. Three weeks later, Walsh produced a stunning display to stop Reece Mould inside a round. Walsh was a long reigning champion at featherweight and has patiently waited for a chance to fight for the lightweight belt.
Brad Pauls, 19-1-1 (11 KOs), will defend his middleweight title against Denzel Bentley, 20-3-1 (17 KOs), on the same card. Pauls had been slated to fight Keiron Conway but instead fights two-time champion, Bentley, in an extremely dangerous fight which does have potential world title implications. The European title will also be on the line.
The remainder of the notice was confirmation of the fights which were ordered or agreed over the past couple of months.
Sam Gilley, 18-1 (9 KOs), and Louis Greene, 17-4 (11 KOs), are waiting for a date and venue for their super welterweight title fight after injury ruled Greene out of the original date.
Harry Scarff, 13-3 (3 KOs), and Liam Taylor, 27-2-1 (14 KOs), are still scheduled to box for the welterweight title but it now looks increasingly likely that their fight will be pushed back until 2025.
Dennis McCann, 16-0-1 (8 KOs), and Peter McGrail, 10-1 (6 KOs), will box for the British and European titles on the undercard of the heavyweight unification rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury on December 21st in Saudi Arabia.
The three title fight between British and European flyweight champion, Jay Harris, 21-3 (11 KOs), and Commonwealth king, Conner Kelsall, 12-0 (1 KO), will go to purse bids on December 11th.
