The most popular fight airing on Netflix Friday night is definitely Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul, but the high-level boxing match is without a doubt the co-main, as undisputed super-lightweight champion Katie Taylor will defend her crown against unified featherweight champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano.
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are two pioneers who are responsible for elevating women’s boxing and taking the sport to the next level. Taylor is a two-weight undisputed world champion, and Serrano has won world titles in seven different weight classes.
After years of traveling in their separate lanes and building their individual legacies, Taylor and Serrano would finally come together to make history. Back in April 2022, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano became the first female boxers to headline a boxing card at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
In the battle for Katie Taylor’s undisputed lightweight crown, the southpaw Amanda Serrano seemed to be in control of the first half of the fight by pressing forward and landing the heavier punches. In the 5th round, Serrano hurt Taylor as she hit her with a flurry of solid shots on multiple occasions.
During the second half of the fight, Taylor was able to rally back by using movement and doing a masterful job of fighting off the back foot. At the conclusion of the exciting 10-round contest, Katie Taylor earned a split-decision victory by the scores of 94-96, 97-93, and 96-93.
Six months later, Taylor made another successful title defense as she defeated Karen Carabajal by way of a unanimous decision. Katie Taylor would go on to move up to super-lightweight to challenge the undisputed world champion, Chantelle Cameron.
It was a homecoming bout for Taylor as the match took place in Dublin, Ireland. The homecoming bout didn’t end the way Taylor anticipated it would, as Cameron won by way of majority decision. Six months later at the same venue, Taylor avenged the loss and became a two-weight undisputed world champion.
Now, the 38-year-old champion Katie Taylor (23-1, 6 KOs) is ready to make the first defense of her undisputed super-lightweight crown. Back in 2022, she was successful against Serrano, and Taylor is confident that on Friday night, history will repeat itself.
After falling short in her April 2022 bout against Katie Taylor, the WBC, WBO featherweight champion Amanda Serrano collected another belt within her division as she defeated Sarah Mahfoud and won the IBF title. Serrano would go on to fight another world champion in February 2023 as she defeated the WBA champion, Erika Cruz.
With the victory, Amanda Serrano became the first Puerto Rican boxer male or female, to win the undisputed crown in the four-belt era. Serrano made more history in October 2023 when she defeated Danila Ramos in a match that consisted of 12 three minute rounds.
Now the 36-year-old Carolina, Puerto Rico native Amanda Serrano (47-2-1, 31 KOs) will enter Friday night’s contest attempting to make more history. If she is able to defeat Taylor, Serrano will join Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields as the only women boxers to go undisputed in two weight classes.
In her Friday night rematch against Taylor, Amanda Serrano will look to press forward, use her jab to set up her power shots and attack the body. Katie Taylor wants to control distance, fight from the outside, and take advantage of counter-punching opportunities.
On Friday night, live on Netflix, the highly anticipated rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will finally happen. The first fight was an instant classic, and the rematch on Friday night is guaranteed to be another epic battle.
