The time is almost here for the epic rematch between two of the best women boxers in the sport. Undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor (23-1, 6 KOs) takes on Puerto Rican great Amanda Serrano (47-2-1, 31 KOs) at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The match is scheduled as the co-main event on the globally televised card between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. The card will be featured on Netflix who has more than 270 million registered subscribers worldwide.
The event has reportedly broken the Texas combat sports record by nearly doubling the previously held record set by Canelo Alvarez when he fought Joe Saunders in 2021. Their 9-million-dollar gate record has been broken by Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, with the new mark registering at 17.8 million dollars. Setting the stage for this historic rematch.
Katie Taylor, at 38, is facing, yet again, the opponent who pushed her to the brink. She for the first time in her career came very close multiple times of being knocked out. Serrano is also the opponent to have landed the most punches against Taylor at 173. It’s been over two years since their first match, will Serrano be able to improve upon her performance?
In the time that’s passed Katie Taylor had two tough matches against Chantelle Cameron, losing the first and winning the rematch. Cameron demonstrated in the first match her ability to expose Taylor by throwing over 200 jabs. Although they all did not connect, throwing them caused Taylor to defend them.
Cameron had great success throwing double and triple jabs and following with effective combinations. Cameron was relentless and applied pressure throughout the entire match. Serrano was rather ineffective with her jab in the first match only landing two punches in the match.
If Serrano improves in this area, it will allow her to be much more effective, create openings, and land multiple punch combinations. She must be relentless but apply smart pressure. This may be her last opportunity to make history, and she must capitalize and give it her all for the full 20-minute match.
In the first match, Taylor took a lot of punishment by staying in the pocket and trading with Serrano. She is a warrior who likes to trade; if she does so in this match, it could end up costing her the match. In her second match against Cameron, Taylor diminished her defense by boxing on the outside and minimizing Cameron’s effectiveness.
Cameron was not as agile or mobile as Taylor and struggled to hit the moving target. Her output was half of what she had thrown in the first match, thus landing less as well. If Taylor sticks and moves, becoming a mobile target in the rematch, it will create offensive challenges for Serrano and minimize her effectiveness.
Taylor cannot play to Serrano’s strength and trade with her; if she does, she may not be as lucky this time around and earn a victory. Taylor has not earned a knockout victory since 2019, to earn one against Serrano may pose extremely challenging.
