Floyd Schofield posted a message to his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, on X, begging him to allow him to fight WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson next in February.
The way that the 22-year-old Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) asked De La Hoya reeked of a fighter too early in his career development stage to be given permission by Golden Boy Promotions to take that kind of a fight against the 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur.
Schofield NOT Ready
If Schofield were an Olympic gold medalist like De La Hoya was starting his own career, it would be one thing, but he’s not that type of talent. De La Hoya won his first world title in his 12th pro fighting in 1994, but he was light years ahead of where Schofield was.
It would be a mismatch if you took that version of De La Hoya and plugged him in with Shakur. Oscar would destroy Shakur, but Schofield ain’t that kind of fighter. Take Oscar’s ability and transplant it into Schofield, and he’d crush Shakur like De La Hoya did Rafael Ruelas.
Fans would roast De La Hoya and Golden Boy if they allowed the novice Schofield to fight Shakur and something bad were to happen. Schofield’s last fight against Rene Tellez Giron showed that he’s not ready to fight for a world title or take on one of the talented contenders.
Schofield’s father was talking about him fighting Andy Cruz or Edwin De Los Santos in a WBA 135-lb title eliminator, but that’s crazy talk. Those guys would school Schofield and make him look bad. Those are both better fighters than Shakur in terms of offensive ability and entertainment value. Shakur is only a defensive guy.
“Bro, that’s your promoter. Call that man and get it done. Y’all don’t have direct contact with them? I told you who to have Oscar [De La Hoya] reach out to. Let’s get this moving.. Begging to him on social media for publicity does not make a fight happen!” said Shakur Stevenson on X, talking to Floyd Schofield.
@OscarDeLaHoya please make the fight with @ShakurStevenson …. What happens when we beat him? This will be an easy fight for KID 🙏🏾👍🏾 He doesn’t have the power to keep us off of him.
All you have to do is believe and you will be a witness of greatness manifesting. #boxingnews…
