David Avanesyan will return to the ring in December before launching yet another assault on the welterweight division in 2025.
Next month the former European and WBA welterweight champion will box on a BCB Promotion against a selected opponent.
In July, Avanesyan, 30-5 (18 KOs), jumped at a short-notice opportunity to fight Jaron Ennis for the IBF title. Although he gave his usual wholehearted effort, the quality American was just too sharp and forced the Russian to retire after five rounds.
Avanesyan is now 36 years old but if he thought that the defeat might finally make fighting him a more attractive proposition for the world’s leading welterweights, he was wrong.
“It’s still difficult to match David. Even though he will fight absolutely anybody, people keep turning him down,” Avanesyan’s manager, Neil Marsh, told BoxingScene.
“We just have to keep trying. We are going to get him a fight in December just to keep him busy and, hopefully, we will be able to get him another big opportunity in 2025. We’ve done it before and we’ll do it again.
“We’re hoping to entice some of the UK’s biggest names in. I’d love to get him the winner of a fight between Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan but I doubt that they would take it.
“If Josh Taylor needs a good comeback opponent, we’re at the other end of the phone. If Harlem Eubank wants a real opponent to give Channel 5 a quality show, we’re here. We’d still love the Conor Benn fight.
“Eddie [Hearn] has a lot of boys at 147lbs in Britain and America and after seeing the way David boxed against Jaron Ennis and Terence Crawford, I thought he might have been willing to throw one of them in with David to try and take his scalp. But it looks like he still doesn’t fancy it.”
One of Marsh’s fighters has been linked to a major fight. After a long run at super middleweight, Zach Parker has decided to move up to light heavyweight. At the recent WBO convention in Puerto Rico, Francis Warren stated that a fight between Parker and Willy Hutchinson has been agreed for early in 2025.
Parker has boxed twice this year. In March he outpointed former world super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge and he followed that up by taking apart former British champion Jack Arnfield.
Hutchinson has had a big year. In June, he outboxed Craig Richards on the Queensberry Vs. Matchroom ‘5 vs. 5’ show and then lost an interim WBO title fight to Joshua Buatsi at Wembley Stadium in September.
“No comment,” Marsh replied when asked about the potential fight, although he did have a knowing smile on his face.
