Eddie Hearn confirms offer made for Shakur Stevenson vs. Floyd Schofield

Eddie Hearn has confirmed that an offer has been sent to Floyd Schofield for a bout with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.

Stevenson was due to face his mandatory challenger William Zepeda on the upcoming Riyadh Season card on February 22 in Saudi Arabia. Zepeda has since confirmed that he will not be facing Stevenson after injuring his left forearm in a split decision win over Tevin Farmer earlier this month.

There had been rumours that fellow Golden Boy fighter, Schofield could jump in to replace the injured Zepeda. The 18-0 (12 KOs) American recently picked up the best win of his career against Rene Tellez Giron and was quick to declare his interest in a world title shot. The rumours that Schofield would be the man to replace Zepeda grew further after he traded blows on social media with Stevenson earlier this week.

Hearn, Stevenson’s promoter, has now confirmed that discussions are underway with Golden Boy and that the fight could possibly still land on the huge card in February. 

“We agreed to fight Zepeda, so did Golden Boy apparently,” Hearn told BoxingScene. “But apparently, he’s injured after a very lackluster performance. Schofield is a name that’s in the hat, we’ve been talking to Golden Boy, we’ve made them an offer and we’re trying to tie that up with His Excellency now.

“I think it’s a really good fight, two very good undefeated American fighters, a lot of chat, a lot of back and forth in that fight. It’s Thanksgiving today, which is difficult to do business on, but we’ll do our best tonight and see where it gets to.”
