The birthday boy, David Benavidez, shoved WBA ‘regular’ champ David Morrell during their face-off today, resulting in a near brawl during their media workout to promote their February 1st headliner.
The ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez was spoiling for a fight and was lucky that Morrell didn’t brain him with his belt when he hurled it at him. Morrell threw it like a baseball pitcher.
Benavidez Loses Control
When the two champions came head-to-head, words were exchanged, and without warning, Benavidez shoved the Cuban Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) across the room. Morrell reacted by tossing his WBA belt at Benavidez, narrowly missing him with a headshot. The two teams immediately converged to prevent fists from being thrown.
It looked like Benavidez was spoiling for a fight, perhaps being angered by Morrell’s trash-talk, as he was letting the Mexican Monster have it during the face-off. It’s likely that Morrell reminded Benavidez that he’d avoided him for two years and wanted no part in fighting him.
Morrell is a big threat to Benavidez’s future dreams of fighting the winner of the Arur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 rematch on February 22nd. There’s a lot of money for Benavidez or Morrell to make fighting the winner of that contest.
So, it’s understandable why Benavidez is so wound up. He literally cannot afford to lose this fight against the Cuban Morrell. If Benavidez, 28, gets knocked out by the KO artist Morrell, he’ll have a long way back to the top. It won’t be easy next time.
“I’m very excited. It’s the biggest fight of my life, and I’m at the best movement of my life physically and emotionally,” said David Benavidez to Fight Hub TV, reacting to his altercation with David Morrell during their face-off during the media workout.
“Everything is 100%, and I’m going to go in there and get the knockout victory. It was my birthday today, so I didn’t want to get too aggressive. I tried to shake his head, but he kept running his mouth. I’m not going to let anybody disrespect me like that,” Benavidez continued about Morrell.
“I don’t know who this guy thinks he is. He thinks he’s the hardest guy on the planet. I’m going to beat the f*** out of him. There’s nothing else left to say. He’s a great fighter, yes, but I’m going to make all these great fighters look average.”
