Demsey McKean is ready to put an end to the hype around rising young heavyweight Moses Itauma on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury II in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Itauma has quickly become one of the hottest prospects in boxing and, at just 19 years old, has already breezed through the likes of Mariusz Wach. McKean is a solid test for young Itauma; the 22-1 Australian’s sole defeat came at the hands of Filip Hrgovic in the 12th round.
McKean is aware that he has been selected as a stepping stone on Itauma’s path towards a world title but is preparing to sink any future plans for the young prospect.
“It’s the Moses [Itauma] show at the moment,” said McKean. “I don’t mind, I’m kind of used to being the underdog, especially in the Filip Hrgovic fight. I’ve had a really good training camp, my sparring has been good, everything has been good. I’m ready to disrupt the Moses show come Saturday.”
“It didn’t sound believable, I can’t lie,” Itauma responded.
The youngster seemed slightly in awe that he had been given the opportunity to fight on such a big stage so early in his career, but insisted that he would not be overlooking what is a tough test against McKean.
“I’m just a teenager, it’s mad that I’m under these bright lights and on the same table as Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. I’m grateful for this opportunity and I’m going to take it with both hands. I’m 19 years old and I only turned professional last year, Demsey McKean has had double the amount of fights and yet he’s the underdog. I’m not looking past Demsey, for me this is my world title fight.”
