If a fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn is going to be made they need to come to terms soon, says promoter Ben Shalom.
Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn have been in negotiations to stage a fight between them for quite a while now, but Boxxer promoter Ben Shalom, who represents Eubank, tells Sky Sports that we’re getting to the point where the sides will need to come to an agreement soon if the fight is going to happen.
To this point Shalom has attributed the longstanding talks to the magnitude of the fight, but admits things need to cross the finish line to get the deal done.
“If a deal is going to be made, it’s going to be made this week,” Shalom said. “We want to make the fight; they want to make the fight, but now it’s crunch time. It can be hard with a fight of this magnitude, particularly when there is so much bad blood. It’s not like the first time, there’s a genuine rivalry now.”
Shalom would liken this situation to dealing with Amir Khan and Kell Brook, who never seemingly could reach an agreement to meet inside the ring until they ultimately did in early 2022.
And according to Shalom, a Eubank vs Benn fight is as big of a British bout that can be made, sitting right alongside prospective fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, saying it could sellout any stadium in the country.
To this point, however, the purse split has been the piece standing in the way, with Eubank Jr saying he’s essentially bending over backwards by accepting a 55/45 split in his favor, while Benn demands even 50/50 terms. Hopefully we’re not at the point where this fight either gets across the finish line or just takes a backseat for a while.
