Former Olympian and super lightweight champion Jamel Herring was arrested yesterday evening on suspicion of assaulting his wife
ESPN reports that former super featherweight champion Jamel Herring “was arrested Thursday evening in Ohio on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence and assault.”
TMZ acquired a copy of the incident report, in which his wife alleges that an “intoxicated” Herring “attacked her by punching her body, pulling her hair, choking and throwing her.” Disturbingly, the report mentions that she “provided pictures from the alleged incident that showed scratch marks on her neck,” only for Herring to allege that the marks were from a prior arrest for domestic violence in December 2023.
Per TMZ, he remains in custody ahead of a January 21st court date.
Herring, a former Olympian and Marine Corps veteran, revitalized a struggling career by dropping from 135 to 130. He ultimately claimed WBO gold from Masayuki Ito and made three successful defenses, notably beating Lamont Roach Jr and knocking out Carl Frampton, before a stoppage loss to Shakur Stevenson kicked off a career-ending 1-3 skid.
