Jamel Herring, a former junior lightweight titleholder, was arrested in Warren County, Ohio, on January 9 and accused of domestic violence.
On January 8, Herring’s wife, Jennifer, reported an incident to the City of Mason (Ohio) Police Department that she said occurred at their home in the early hours of January 4.
On January 9 Jamel Herring was booked on charges of assault and domestic violence into the Warren County Jail, where he remained in custody and was awaiting arraignment at the time of publication.
In Jennifer Herring’s initial report, police say she described her husband entering their home at approximately 2 a.m. while “extremely intoxicated” before he began “bullying” her on marital issues.
According to the police report, Jennifer Herring accused Jamel Herring of “‘viciously’ attacking her by punching her all over her body, pulled her hair and threw her across the room. … Mrs. Herring then stated Mr. Herring choked her … and she felt he was going to kill her because she had trouble breathing.”
When officers initially spoke to Jamel Herring and told him about his wife sharing photos of scratches on her neck from the incident, he said the photos were from a previous incident in December 2023 for which he had been arrested.
There have been at least three cases involving Jamel Herring. Brunch Boxing posted a Hamilton County Municipal Court journal entry from a 2018 arrest. In that case, Herring, a former Marine, received a 90-day suspended sentence and was ordered to 90 days of community service, one year of probation and one year of PTSD treatment.
As for this most recent case: Jamel Herring has a court date scheduled for January 21.
The 39-year-old last fought in April, when he dropped a split decision to Jackson Jon England.
