David Benavidez and David Morrell do not like one another, and at his media workout in Las Vegas, Benavidez admitted their rivalry is now personal.
The light heavyweights meet in a mouth-watering clash in Las Vegas on February 1, and the 28-year-old Benavidez, known for his fast combinations and explosive power, has promised to go looking for the Cuban.
“The way I fight, I always try to take my opponents out. It doesn’t mean you always get it, but we’re definitely going to be pushing for it,” he said. “David Morrell has made it personal for me.
“I’m glad he’s confident in himself. It’s all speculation until we get in there. On February 1, I’ll show why I’m at this level.”
Benavidez, of course, said camp had been amazing, that he was going to deliver his best performance yet and that he has never been stronger.
“I’ve been in big fights since I was 20-years-old, so to be out there representing the Mexican and Mexican-American people on this stage, it’s everything I’ve wanted out of this sport,” the 29-0 (24 KOs) Benavidez added. “I have to show people that I’m the real ‘Mexican Monster’.”
Asked about the possibility that the winner of the contest between he and Morrell will face the winner of the appealing rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitriy Bivol for all of the 175lbs marbles, Benavidez said: “Right now I’m 100 percent focused on February 1. After that we can talk about getting all of those light heavyweight belts.”
