Irish junior middleweight prospect Callum Walsh is excited by the prospect of headlining once more in New York City.
Walsh, who is trained by Freddie Roach, has topped bills in New York before and meets Scotland’s Dean Sutherland in a Celtic clash on St Patrick’s Day weekend on Sunday, March 16.
Walsh is 12-0 (10 KOs) and the Cork man boxes in a 10-rounder at The Theater in Madison Square Garden.
“The only way you’re going to headline a show like this is if you’re fighting and both of us are going to put on a show for the fans,” said Walsh. “His style is very aggressive and my style is very aggressive and we will meet in the middle of the ring… I’m honored to follow in the footsteps of so many great Irish fighters who fought in New York City before me.”
Sutherland, from Aberdeen, is 19-1 (7 KOs).
“This will be my first time fighting in the United States and it’s in a great match-up in an amazing venue,” said Sutherland. “I know that there will be a huge crowd of Irish boxing fans on March 16 but I’m coming to win, take the title [WBC Continental Americas] home and keep my winning streak alive.
“I’ve seen Callum’s fights, he’s very aggressive as am I. Right off the bat there’s going to be action; none of this moving around on the ropes. New York boxing fans who want to see two real fighters – March 16 at Madison Square Garden is the place to be.”
Also on the bill – which will be shown on UFC Fight Pass – is ‘The Hebrew Hammer’, Cletus Seldin. He is 28-1 (23 KOs), matched against Brooklyn’s Issouf Kinda, 20-6 (9 KOs), over eight frames, and said: “No surprises here, I will bring the Hammer as I always do.”
The bill is promoted by Tom Loeffler, who said Madison Square Garden is his favorite venue.
“New York City boxing fans have great expectations and we’ve built this card with not only a tremendous main event but with many exciting Irish fighters on the undercard befitting ‘The Biggest Irish Boxing Card in New York City History,’” he said.
Also on the bill, former junior lightweight title challenger Feargal McCrory, 16-1 (8 KOs), meets Mexican Brandon Benitez, 21-3 (9 KOs), over 10 and Dublin super middleweight hope Emmet Brennan, 5-0 (1 KO) faces Kevin Cronin, 8-2-1 (4 KOs) of County Kerry, Ireland, in a rematch from their hard-fought eight-rounder that Brennan won by decision in September.
Dublin heavyweight Thomas ‘The Bomber’ Carty, 10-0 (9 KOs), makes his US debut against Ohio’s 10-3 (8 KOs) Dajuan Calloway while featherweight Donagh Keary will make his pro debut in a four-rounder on the show.
