Shakur Stevenson looked beat up in a photo posted by Shawn Porter moments after their sparring session for Shakur’s title defense of his WBC lightweight belt against Floyd Schofield on February 22nd at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.

Porter was trying to give Shakur some cover by saying in the photo caption, “The kid only looks taller because of the angle at which the photo was taken.” That’s not reality. Shakur is a massive weight bully at 135 and should be fighting with the killers at 140. I’m just surprised that Porter didn’t explain why Shakur’s face looked all beat up. He couldn’t blame that on the camera angle.

In the picture, Shakur towered over Porter, looking way bigger than him, like a young Primo Carnera. Stevenson has been giving boxing fans excuses why he can’t go up to 140 to fight Ernesto Mercado, and 147 went out the door. He looked more than big enough to campaign in either of those divisions. It just looks like Stevenson is flat-out scared and doesn’t want to deal with the power of the young lions like Ernesto.

Circling Wagons

Shakur is getting all the help in the world to prepare for the 22-year-old novice Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs). The retired Porter is just the latest. Stevenson had Terence Crawford, 37, and Floyd Mayweather assist him in this fight.

This is a sign of worry. Stevenson is circling his wagons, getting all the help he can from veterans for his battle against Schofield. He’s getting tips left and right from the three vets to help bail him out against this young lion. I smell fear.

With Shakur’s glass hand, if it ain’t 100% on February 22nd, he will be in trouble. Schofield is not the type of guy anyone wants to fight with just one hand. Running from this guy won’t work because he knows how to cut off the ring, and he’ll put some fire under his backside.
