An attractive junior middleweight fight between Bournemouth’s in-form Lee Cutler and Birmingham’s Sam Eggington is edging closer.
Sources told BoxingScene that the fight was discussed last year but it is back on the table after Cutler came through Stephen McKenna in December and he has become a crowd-pleasing addition to the Boxxer stable.
Trained by Josh Pritchard out of the Shane McGuigan camp, Cutler is 15-1 (7 KOs), while the experienced warrior Eggington is 35-9 (20 KOs) and has a string of Fight of the Year contenders to his name.
The two seem to be on course for a contest at the Resorts World Arena in April on a card that features heavyweight prospect Frazer Clarke and fellow Olympian Ben Whittaker.
With Clarke needing to come back somewhat gently after he was defeated in a round by Fabio Wardley last year, and Whittaker’s opponent as-yet unknown, Boxxer need a well-matched bout on the TV-portion of the show, and Eggington-Cutler fits the bill.
But Cutler, coming off the McKenna win, should be able to hold out for good money as Birmingham is Eggington’s backyard.
According to Eggington’s X account, fight news is brewing.
“Big news hopefully announced soon. Another potential fight of the year and a bit closer to home than usual. Keep an eye out,” wrote “The Savage”.
Eggington boxed twice in 2024, losing a majority decision to Abass Baraou over 12 before defeating Alan Sebastian Velazquez over six rounds, and in 2023 Eggington visited Cutler’s hometown of Bournemouth where he stunned 20-0 prospect Joe Pigford, stopping him in five, on a bill that also featured Cutler.
