Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia are now training together in San Diego for their respective fights against William Scull and Bruno Surace.
Salvador Rodriguez reports that Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and Munguia training. He posted a video of them in training today. WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo is facing IBF champ Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) for the undisputed championship on May 3rd in Riyadh. Munguia will be fighting a rematch with Surace.
Ideal Matchups
Canelo and Munguia would be better off changing opponents. Munguia could fight Scull, which would be a very winnable one for him. Canelo could face the unbeaten Surace to avenge Munguia’s loss for him. That would be the ideal situation.
Last May, Canelo defeated Munguia by a 12-round unanimous decision, giving him his first career defeat before he was knocked out in six rounds by Surace later in the year on December 14th.
It’s overkill for Canelo to use Munguia as his training partner for Scull, as he’s not on the same level in terms of power and offensive skills. Canelo has the firepower to stop Scull unless he gets on his bike to move around.
Scull is the one that Turki Al-Sheikh wanted for Canelo’s first fight of his four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. Canelo was in the negotiations for what would have been a gigantic fight against Jake Paul, but Turki signed him to a deal.
He chose Scull as the opponent for Canelo to help setup his “big fight” against Terence Crawford. That fight will likely attract much smaller numbers on PPV than Canelo vs. Paul because Crawford isn’t popular and isn’t a big PPV draw.
