Former world titleholder Albert Puello has praised Gary Antuanne Russell, stating that “he has very few weaknesses,” but believes he has found at least one as they prepare to face off.
Puello will fight the 2016 U.S. Olympian Russell for the WBC junior welterweight interim title on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena as part of the pay-per-view undercard of Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin.
Puello (22-0, 8 KOs), 29, won the vacant WBA junior welterweight title against Botirzhon Akhmedov. However, he failed a drug test for Clomiphene before his fight with Rolando Romero, leading to a six-month suspension starting June 22, 2023, by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Puello returned in December to win a unanimous decision over Ector Madera.
Russell (17-0, 17 KOs), 27, known for his concussive power, marks Puello’s toughest opponent to date, having won all his fights by stoppage. Despite this, Puello remains confident.
“Gary Antuanne Russell is a great fighter and someone who packs a lot of power,” Puello said. “He doesn’t have many weaknesses, but I do believe that I’ve found his.”
Puello cited his extensive preparation against left-handed fighters as a reason for his confidence.
“I’ve sparred against nothing but southpaws, so I couldn’t be more prepared,” Puello said.
Puello aims to become a two-time world champion despite his undefeated record and previous drug test failure, which cost him his belt. Russell, riding a 17-fight knockout streak, has notable wins over former world champions Rances Barthelemy and Viktor Postol. However, this fight will be his first major step up in competition against an opponent in their prime.
“I’m extremely ready to take advantage of this great opportunity that I have,” Puello said.
