Flyweight Andy Dominguez climbed off the canvas to secure an eight-round split decision win over Angel Geovanny Meza Morales in the main event of a DAZN telecast Tuesday at Sony Hall in New York City.

The judges scored the fight 77-74 (Dominguez), 76-75 (Morales) and 76-75 (Dominguez).

“I feel like this is a good experience,” Dominguez of the fight and the knockdown. “I am not going to get dropped anymore.”

The fight started with a feel-out round, but Dominguez, now training under Marvin Somodio in Los Angeles, began to dictate the pace in the second round. Utilizing an educated jab, Dominguez pressed forward with calculated aggression. Morales, 24, known for his high activity, struggled to get off punches as Dominguez countered effectively and methodically broke him down.

Momentum shifted in the third round when Morales landed a body shot. Later, Morales landed a clean right hand after Dominguez missed a left hook, sending Dominguez to the canvas. After clearly winning the first two rounds, Dominguez entered the fourth in a much closer fight. Sensing an opportunity, Morales turned up the pressure, fighting with urgency and landing heavy shots.

The fifth round showcased a battle of styles. Dominguez’s skill allowed him to land more punches, while Morales’ power shots were eye-catching and thudding. The sixth saw Dominguez take control, landing cleaner punches, though Morales surged late, pursuing him with power shots.

By the seventh round, Morales’ punching power seemed to fade, allowing Dominguez to push forward with more confidence. In the eighth and final round, Dominguez boxed smartly, controlling the action and neutralizing Morales’ offense to secure the victory.

“I want to keep fighting and fighting the good fighters,” Dominguez said.

Dominguez improved to 12-1 (6 KOs), extending his win streak to two after suffering his lone defeat to Yankiel Rivera. Morales fell to 8-3-3 (6 KOs) and is now on a two-fight losing streak.
