Andy Ruiz Jr. and Jarrell Miller weighed in heavier than expected today at their initial weigh-in before tonight’s official ceremonial at 9 pm PT in Los Angeles.
The weights for these two super-sized heavyweights are disappointing because both are too heavy, and it is impossible to see either as a potential opponent for a world title shot.
Weigh-in Results
Andy Ruiz: 274.4
Jarrell Miller: 305.6
Ruiz’s Weight Raises Red Flags
Ruiz’s weight is the highest it has been since his loss to Anthony Joshua in their rematch in December 2019. He weighed 283 lbs for that fight and was too heavy to move around the ring to get to Joshua.
Andy has been living the good life with the $10 million he made from his two fights against AJ, and he’s failed to put in the hard work to stay away from the kitchen table to drop that weight.
In Ruiz’s previous fight two years ago against Luis Ortiz on September 4, 2022, he weighed 268 lbs and barely edged a 12-round decision against the 43-year-old. Ruiz’s weight was a factor in that fight, and he’s even heavier now.
Miller’s Claims Fall Short
For his part, Miler (26-1-1, 22 KOs) had said he had lost 40+ lbs during camp from the 333 lbs that he’d weighed in for his loss to Daniel Dubois last December. Miller lost 27.4 lbs rather than 40, which could make a difference because 305 is still a lot of weight for him to move around the ring on Saturday night against Ruiz.
Surprisingly, both heavyweights came in so heavy because they’d talked about the hard work they’d put in during camp and were in great shape. The weight doesn’t reflect that.
Andy Ruiz Jr: “I feel like I’m in my prime right now. After all the ups and downs that I’ve been through, I feel like this is my moment, and we die inside that ring,” said Andy Ruiz Jr. to DAZN Boxing when asked if he still has the ‘hunger’ at this stage of his career to fight hard against Jarrell Miller.
“We got to work really hard. He wants to be a champion, and I want to be a champion again. The best man wins on Saturday.”
Ade Oladipo: “When you see Daniel Dubois now a world champion, and Oleksandr Usyk now the king, do you realize now that a win here puts you in a position where maybe you are one fight away from a world title? Does that give you extra incentive going into this fight as well?”
Jarrell Miller: “100%. He knows what it feels like to have his hand raised and get a championship belt. I don’t know yet. So, I’m still seeking that thrill. I’m still seeking that feeling, and the hunger inside of me is even stronger now. I’m 35-years-old. It’s do or die.”
