Anthony Cacace has confirmed that there is truth to the rumors that he is to defend his IBF junior lightweight title against Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez in Belfast in March.

Talks were ongoing between Cacace’s and Nunez’s promoters, Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn respectively, before Hearn revealed earlier this month that an agreement had been made for Warren’s Queensberry to stage the contest.

Cacace confirmed that there are discussions for the fight to land in his home city in March.

“Yeah, there’s truth to it all,” Cacace told BoxingScene. “I can’t say too much about it now, but it’s all in the background.”

Nunez secured his status as mandatory challenger for Cacace’s IBF belt by stopping Miguel Marriaga in August. The now 27-1 (27 KOs) Mexican has one of the most impressive knockout ratios in the sport today. This, however, does not impress Cacace.

“[It’s an] easy win,” he said. “Sugar Nunez, listen, he’s a puncher, he’s got this big punching record, he doesn’t impress me.

“I would love to give Matchroom another scalping, as I’ve done twice previously. Give me the money and I’ll scalp another one.”

Prior to Cacace agreeing to defend his title against his mandatory challenger, the Irishman was in talks to face former featherweight champion Leigh Wood.

Wood has not fought since defeating Josh Warrington in October 2023 and when Cacace was asked if he could say why the fight was unable to happen, he replied: “Not really. You’ll probably find out a bit more about that in the coming months.”

Cacace, 35, achieved his career ambition of winning a world title when he dethroned Joe Cordina back in May. The Belfast star is now purely focused on using the time left he has in the sport to secure his families future by fighting the biggest names possible.

“[I want the biggest] pay days,” Cacace said. “Big names, if I can get a unification fight I’ll take it. Whatever happens from here, as long as my kids and my family are secure, I don’t really care what belts are on the line”

“[I want] Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson,” he continued. “Any of these boys at the top, any of these boys who I’ll get laughed at for calling out. I just want big names, big money and a big future.”
