Pedro Guevara beat Andrew Moloney for the interim belt in May
When discussing Juan Francisco Estrada’s planned move to bantamweight, I mentioned that with his fellow titlists occupied, this was an opportunity for WBC super flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez to take care of his mandatory obligation. Turns out that will be the case, as Jake Donovan reports Mauricio Sulaiman confirms that Rodriguez is set to meet interim champion Pedro Guevara on a November 9th Jaron “Boots” Ennis show in Philadelphia.
Following a two-fight stint at 112 that saw him beat Cristian Gonzalez for the vacant WBO title and batter IBF titlist Sunny Edwards eight months later, Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KO) returned to 115 to finish Estrada in violent fashion this past June. Guevara (42-4-1, 22 KO) isn’t on “El Gallo’s” level, but his credentials are as legit as they come; he’s a former champ at 108, hasn’t been dropped in over a decade or stopped ever, and edged out Andrew Moloney in hostile territory in May.
The pair should make for an extremely watchable fight while we wait for unification opportunities to arise again.
