David Benavidez says he expects the former Cuban amateur star David Morrell to grovel at his feet after he beats him on February 1st, admitting that the ‘Mexican Monster’ “is the best” after he administers a beating on him at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The “Respect” Prophecy
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) says ALL his opponents follow the same formula where they trash talk him to no end, saying he’s a “bum,” has “no defense,” and a limited fighter going in. But after he beats them, they sing a different tune, slathering him with compliments.
What Benavidez isn’t pointing out is that the guys he’s been fighting throughout his long career were smaller guys, like Demetrius Andrade, Caleb Plant, David Lemieux, Anthony Dirrell, and Ronald Ellis. Those were the best that Benavidez fought before making the jump up to 175 last June.
“I don’t have nothing. I’m a bum. I’m a RoboCop. That’s fine that he’s thinking like that,” said David Benavidez to Boxing News about David Morrell viewing him as a second-rate fighter. “You better have no excuses after I knock you out in front of your own people.
“What are you going to say? You’re going to say David Benavidez is the best. Just like you and everybody else I fought before. They say the same thing. After they get in the ring with me, it’s a whole different story. You’re going to see, too,” said Benavidez.
That sounds sick. As you can see, WBC interim light heavyweight champion Benavidez has created an entirely unrealistic cartoon in his head. The fight is more likely to play out in reverse, with Morrell winning and Benavidez saying afterward, ‘How could I be so wrong?‘
Morrell’s Power
It will be interesting to see if Benavidez, 28, can get away with fighting with the same style as he did at 168 when he gets in the ring with Morrell, who is a monstrous puncher with either hand.
Benavidez may not last long against Morrell fighting the way he did in his last three contests, particularly against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15th. Morrell hits too hard and will punch holes through Benavidez if he tries to overwhelm him with volume like he did against the 37-year-old Gvozdyk.
