David Benavidez posted a message on Instagram directed at Canelo Alvarez, telling him they must fight because it’s “what the sport needs” now.

Benavidez’s name was omitted from Canelo’s four-fight contract with Riyadh Season. Instead of ‘The Mexican Monster’ being mentioned, 154-pounder Terence Crawford is scheduled as Canelo’s September 13th opponent, and Bruno Surace and Jermall Charlo are options for his May 4th fight.

Avoiding Benavidez?

Some believe that Canelo told Turki Al-Sheikh that he wouldn’t sign the contract for his four-fight deal if Benavidez was part of the deal. That’s actually believable. Benavidez has been treated like a leper by Canelo, who wanted no part of fighting him all these years.

“Imagine if Canelo would just agree and fight me already. It’s not about the money. It’s about what the sport needs right now, and we owe it to the fans. Without a doubt, it would go down as the best Mexican shootout in boxing history. Let’s give the fans what they deserve!!! We 300 percent confident on this side, but I can’t say the same for the other side 😂,” said David Benavidez on Instagram with his message to Canelo Alvarez.

Benavidez’s win over previously unbeaten WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion David Morrell last Saturday night in Las Vegas may have wrecked any chances of him ever getting a fight against Canelo. Benavidez looked too dominant in that fight, showing no vulnerability in winning a wide 12-round decision. Now, if he had struggled and gotten dropped a couple of times by Morrell, that would have helped bring interest from Canelo.

Turki Al-Sheikh must know that his four-fight deal with Canelo will likely result in his matches bringing in lackluster PPV buys if he doesn’t take the fights that the fans want to see, like Benavidez. The ideal situation would be for Canelo to face Benavidez in two of his four fights, as those matches would create much interest from fans worldwide.

It’s pointless for Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) to continue to pressure the superstar Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) to fight him because he’s already shown his hand, repeatedly mostly choosing lesser fighters in the last four years.
