Edgar Berlanga will return next month against unbeaten Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in super middleweight headliner on a Matchroom-promoted show on DAZN at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida. This is the confidence-booster that the recently beaten Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) that he’s been rumored to be taking.

The Return

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican native Gonzalez-Ortiz returned in 2024 after being out of the ring for 10 years since 2014, beating Edward Ulloa Diaz and Jose Saint-Hilaire Gil (5-23). As you can see, Gonzalez-Ortiz hasn’t exactly done much to earn a fight against Berlanga. Being inactive for a decade and fighting a couple of scrubs is all it takes to get picked out.

He won two fights last year against lesser opposition before being selected as Berlanga’s opponent. What happened when Berlanga fought journeyman Gabriel Rosado in Puerto Rico is unclear, but perhaps Gabe’s 17 losses scared away DAZN.

Gonzalez-Ortiz is the opponent that will give the 27-year-old Berlanga a chance to showcase his skills. Edgar said on X that after his March 15th fight, he’s going to fight one of the big names from his hit list.

Berlanga’s hit list:

– Jaime Munguia
– Canelo Alvarez – rematch
– Jermall Charlo
– Caleb Plant
– Diego Pacheco

Berlanga lost to unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez last year on September 14th in a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision in Las Vegas. It was Berlanga’s first fight against a truly world-class opponent, and he looked completely overmatched despite having a huge size advantage over the Mexican star. Berlanda resembled a cruiserweight. That fight wasn’t worth watching, as Berlanga looked like he was there to survive. He hadn’t done anything to earn a title shot against Canelo and was picked largely due to his unbeaten record for appearance’s sake.
