Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, says they won’t start negotiations for a rematch with Ryan Garcia until his PED case has been dealt with and Devin’s record changed from his loss last April.

Haney’s Diminished Leverage

Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) isn’t in a strong position to call the shots with Ryan Garcia, especially after today’s purse bid news of Top Rank being the lone bidder for his fight against WBC mandatory Sandor Martin.

Today’s low purse bid suggests that Haney’s market value has plunged since his loss to Ryan, making Bill’s demands unreasonable. It’s important that Bill not anger Ryan because he’s Devin’s best chance for another big payday.

Haney’s popularity has plummeted since his loss to Ryan, and the boxing public hasn’t been sympathetic to Bill’s attempts to whitewash what happened by blaming his defeat on the positive PED test for Kingry.

“Bill Haney tells ESPN he’s not taking part in negotiations for any fight until [Ryan] Garcia’s doping case is adjudicated and Haney’s record is accordingly adjusted,” said Mike Coppinger on X

Top Rank’s Lone Bid and Hearn’s Disinterest

Top Rank won with a bid of $2.42 million, and Devin will receive $1,524,600 of that total. That’s a low amount compared to what Haney got for his fight with Ryan Garcia last April, and it shows how bad things are for him.

The situation for Haney won’t be better after his title defense against Sandor Martin. None of the other top fighters at 140 will provide Haney with the payday he got from his fight with Ryan and the chances he’ll lose to better fighters in the division.

If Haney moves up to 147, he’ll be forced to fight tougher opposition and will lose the size advantage he enjoyed at 140. Haney will be food for big fish at welterweight, and his career will sink fast.

“We don’t have a contract with Devin. It’s not an appealing fight; it wasn’t a fight DAZN was motivated by or one that had any value. Devin is a free agent and has his own promotional company,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to Ariel Helwani on X, talking about why Matchroom didn’t bid on Devin Haney’s title defense against WBC mandatory Sandor Martin, which he had previously recommended he take next.

You know things were bad for Haney when his former promoter, Eddie Hearn, didn’t want anything to do with bidding on the Sandor Martin fight. Haney must feel abandoned right now, and Bill ain’t helping him by setting up conditions for Ryan to meet.
