Junior welterweight Blair Cobbs is preparing for the biggest fight of his career under the guidance of his new trainer, Justin Gamber. Cobbs will face Adrien Broner on June 7 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KOs) has had a nomadic professional journey, moving from Las Vegas to Southern California and back to Las Vegas. Gamber, the trainer who led Caleb Plant to an undisputed fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, has been away from the sport for two-and-a-half years after parting company with the former IBF super middleweight boss. This bout against Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs) marks Gamber’s return as a coach.
“The ring rust is there for me, too,” Gamber said. “I took a break for a while after Caleb [Plant], and so this is my first fight back since 2021. It’s been a learning process for us, but we’re on the same page and look forward to getting into fight week now.”
Despite interrupting Broner’s own media workout on Tuesday evening, Cobbs spoke highly of his opponent, highlighting his status as a four-division world champion.
“AB (Adrien Broner) is my toughest opponent,” Cobbs said. “I don’t know who is going to show up or what’s going to happen because I’ve never been this prepared for a fight. I’m very thankful for the team I have and my trainer Justin Gamber.”
Cobbs and Gamber have been working together since February. Broner, who also has a new team, is training with Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis in Las Vegas. Gamber emphasized that their focus remains solely on the upcoming fight.
“We haven’t thought about the future,” Gamber said. “Adrien Broner is a tough test and a four-time world champion for a good reason. He’s a good fighter. I’m not getting caught up in talk about him being old or out of shape. I’m staying focused on him because, in order to get where we want to be after this fight, we have to focus on him first.”
