Blue-Chip welterweight prospect Jalil “Major” Hackett has made a major career decision as it was announced on Friday that Hackett had penned a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
The 21-year-old Jalil Hackett is an extremely talented prospect who has all the tools. Hackett knows he is one of the top prospects in the sport of boxing, but he believes inactivity is holding him back, and it’s the primary reason he hasn’t reached the contenders level.
A product of Washington D.C., Jalil Hackett posted an amateur record of 140-19. Hackett would officially make the transition from the amateurs to the pro ranks in March 2021 when he inked a promotional deal with Mayweather Promotions.
Three months later, Jalil Hackett made his professional boxing debut and scored a TKO victory over Angelo Diaz. After fighting three times in 2021, Hackett would only fight once in 2022.
The last time Jalil Hackett saw action inside the squared circle was in December 2023 as the co-feature for Boxfest 6, an event that took place at the Red Owl Boxing Arena in Houston, Texas. Hackett stopped Adrian Gutierrez in the third round and won the WBC Youth Title.
Four months after his victory in Houston, Jalil Hackett took to social media to announce that he was a free agent. During an interview with YSM Sports Media, Hackett revealed why he left Mayweather Promotions.
“I just felt like in order to grow as far as my career, I would have to do it elsewhere,” Hackett said. “In the three years that I spent with Mayweather Promotions, I got 8 fights and 7 knockouts, but in order for me, you know, keep going, and keep thriving, and growing as a fighter, I felt like l had to do it elsewhere.”
Once Jalil Hackett posted his status as a free agent, the majority of his fans suggested he team up with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. On Friday, May 24th, Hackett did just that, as both he and Eddie Hearn appear to be very excited about their new alliance.
“Jalil is a fantastic young talent,” said Hearn. “Building stars of the future is something that we love to do at Matchroom, and in Jalil, we have a real gem.”
Jalil Hackett is ready to start this new chapter of his boxing journey. He is looking forward to receiving the opportunity to showcase his skills and navigate his way up the welterweight rankings.
“I’m so happy to have signed with the biggest promoters in the game,” said Hackett. “Eddie and Matchroom have a plan for my development that I’m really excited by, and I cannot wait to get back in the ring.”
The next time Jalil Hackett competes inside the ring, he wants it to be a step-up fight because in 2025, he would like to be on pace to take on the top guys in the welterweight division.
